Fine art photographer Lenny Foster’s work will be on display in the Art in Public Spaces Exhibition at the County Administration Rotunda Gallery February 15-April 22, 2022.  Work from his series “Where We Stand” will provide a glimpse into the rich African American history of the County.

There will be a morning reception at 8:30am on February 15.  A formal opening on Wednesday, February 16 from 5:30pm until 7:00pm features remarks from Foster at 6:00pm.   The free events are open to the public.

“This series has been influenced by my relocation to St. Augustine, Florida and, more precisely, moving into the historic township of Lincolnville. Upon arriving in St. Augustine, I discovered a deep history, largely unknown to the public at large, of African Americans in our County.

I learned a hidden history of my own African American heritage…. As the awareness of this history dawned on me, it has become the focus of my work allowing me to combine my fine art photography with a historic and social awareness of the continuing struggle for freedom and recognition by the people who are my ancestors, my heritage. I feel honored to be able to share this history, through my work, with a broader public.”

The Cultural Council is proud to present this exhibition with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, the Florida Division of Arts and Culture, the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council, and the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners.
