FDOT project to help truck drivers find safe parking.

The system is to be installed at public facilities on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County along with several other locations throughout the state.

Work begins next week on the $3.7 million project. The TPAS system came about after studies revealed truck overflow parking was occurring at several rest areas, and some truck drivers resorting to unsafe and illegal methods of parking alongside the interstate or ramp shoulders.

The TPAS system will provide real-time information and help drivers locate safe options by using sensors to track how many parking spots are available. This information is relayed to dynamic message signs that will be installed ahead of the rest area, and allow truck drivers to make more informed decisions on their travel and planning their stops.

FDOT has hired Florida Safety Contractors, Inc., to complete the project, and work is expected to be completed this fall.

During construction, impacts to the traveling public and pedestrians are expected to be limited, and no parking stall closures to trucks are allowed between 4 p.m. and 9 a.m.
