The Minorcan Experience – March Heritage and Culture Month

Join us on Saturdays in March for The Minorcan Experience. These events present the heritage and culture of descendants of Minorcans who came to St. Augustine in 1777. Events are Free!

Events Schedule:

March 4 — 11:00am-3:00pm — Minorcan Arts Exhibit (part of Menorcan Heritage Celebration) at Oldest House Complex
Meet:
* Hertiage artists Byron Capo, Barbara McCarl Acosta, Donna Craig, John Sallas and Rosa Johnson.
* Dr. Darien Andrew – of Flagler Minorcan Studies Project – will have a display of Pulitzer Prize winning Minorcan writer Stephen Vincent Benet and his literary siblings.
* Dr. Ann Browning-Masters, author of Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers: Poetry of St. Augustine. She’ll be signing copies of her book.
* Angela Ortagus Saxon, co-author of A Tour of St. Augustine: History, Food and Culture, A Minorcan Perspective. She’ll be there to sign books.
* Ryan Saxon – Cigar Box Guitars and Ukuleles

March 11 — (time needs cofirmed) Minorcan Burials Walking Tour by Elizabeth Duran Gessner at San Lorenzo Cemetery. Attendance is limited. Please register with theminorcanexperience@gmail.com

March 18 — 2:00pm — Ryan Brennan at The Ximenez-Fatio House.  Sharing the story of his 3 day walk from New Smyrna to St. Augustine – same walk taken in 1777 by Minorcan, Greek and Italian indentured settlers.

March 25 — 2:00pm — Ryan Saxon Book Discussion at Anastasia Island Branch Library. Discussing his book, A Tour of St. Augustine: History, Food, and Culture.  A Minorcan Perspective and Maria’s Secret Ingredient, a Minorcan childrens’ book. Available for signing and purchase.

March 25 — 5:30pm-7:30pm — Bryan Capo Exhibition in the Treasury Building.  A self-taught photographer, he will be selling a selection of his work featuring scenes of St. Augustine.
