Historic Sites

While it’s delightfully difficult to separate family attractions from historic sites in St. Augustine, one must no doubt recognize the historic significance of centuries old marks of the Spanish Empire’s effect on the area. These are evident in the grand Castillo de San Marcos, many of the oldest homes that are open for tours, and the architecture from the nineteenth, twentieth, and even twenty-first centuries that are constantly accenting this style. In 1888 Henry Flagler, for example, built his Ponce de Leon Hotel in the Spanish Renaissance tradition. St. Augustine is an extremely interesting historic destination in that it is vigilant about maintaining its old world feel. Discerning the true historic sites from the gorgeous town around them is therefore a fun and educational challenge. St. Augustine is, after all, the oldest continually occupied city in the United States, which was no small challenge. Come discover four centuries of Floridian and American history. You’re likely to encounter Native Americans, Pirates, British Soldiers, and Sheriffs from the turn of the century, among many others. A visit to the town immerses you, quite literally, in history.
