Come and watch the light come up on the first day of the solar new year on the Intercoastal Waterway, behind the Visitor Center, at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park during the Winter Solstice Celebration. Park ranger Joe Woodbury will share his unique knowledge of the myths and legends centered on the winter solstice and help you track the movement of the sun throughout the year. Winter Solstice celebrations stretching back for ages have been included as a ritual in many cultures. The tradition started with a fear that the fading daylight would never return unless humans kept watch and celebrated the seasonal change.
Meet in the Garden Parking lot. Hot Coffee will be provided.
