Growing up on a cotton farm in Louisiana as one of seven kids, music was played for entertainment..for release. When blues was added to Tony Joe White’s childhood diet of country, White was hooked, learning to play his father’s guitar by ear. He formed a series of bands and took to the road after finishing school and a stint at truck driving in Georgia. His laid back, country blues-inflected vocals learned to thrive against the roil of an R&B backbeat. His signature sound was completed when he began to introduce original songs drawn from his experiences and upbringing.
Gems like “Polk Salad Annie” and “Rainy Night in Georgia” were just the beginning, as he proceeded to write, record, and perform regularly through the present day, finding great success both at home and abroad. Through the years, his songs have been recorded by everyone from Tina Turner to Elvis Presley to Dusty Springfield. Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Etta James, and many others have also covered the songs of this legendary singer and songwriter.
On White’s latest album “Hoodoo”, he produces an ethereal, authentic bayou guitar trance. Awash in danger, spiritual uncertainty, and environmental fury, Hoodoo’s lyrical concerns are matched by a particularly intense strain of White’s trademark swamp funk.
Mere Woodard was raised on a well-balanced diet of the Beastie Boys, Joni Mitchell, G Love and Special Sauce, and Simon and Garfunkel. In 2006, she left her hometown of Pittsburgh to follow the sun and find her heart in Jacksonville. She wrote her first album, “Dance in the Rain”, in 2013. In 2014, she ventured into the studio and created “Like the Sea”, capturing er eclectic, unguarded, indie, folk style.
