Progressive rock icons Styx will return to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre with special guests .38 Special and The Outlaws. When they were here in May 2014, they performed to a sold-out crowd. The six men comprising Styx draws from over four decades of barn burning chart hits, joyous sing-alongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. A Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man”, from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the poignant rumination on the fleeting nature of fame in “Miss America”, from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball”, from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made.
Jacksonville’s own .38 Special continue to bring their signature blast of Southern Rock to over 100 cities a year. At each and every show, thousands of audience members are amazed by the explosive power of the band’s performance. Their many gold and platinum album awards stand in testament to the endurance of a legendary powerhouse. Most associate the band with their arena-rock pop smashes, “Hold On Loosely”,“Rockin’ Into the Night”, ”Caught Up in You”, “Fantasy Girl”, “If I’d Been the One”, “Back Where You Belong”, “Chain Lightnin’”, “Second Chance” and more, timeless hits.
The Outlaws – known for their triple-guitar rock attack and three-part country harmonies – became one of the first acts signed by Clive Davis (at the urging of Ronnie VanZant) to his then-fledgling Arista Records. The band’s first three albums The Outlaws, Lady In Waiting and Hurry Sundown – featuring such rock radio favorites as “There Goes Another Love Song”, “Green Grass & High Tides”, “Knoxville Girl” and “Freeborn Man” – would become worldwide gold and platinum landmarks of the Southern Rock era.
