Commemorate St. Augustine’s 452nd Anniversary of Menéndez’ Landing and Founder’s Day at the Mission Nombre de Diós. The re-enactment of the landing of the city’s founder, Pedro Menendez de Avilés and his crew being greeted by the firing of cannon and muskets and the waving of flags as he arrives by boat will take place at 10:00am followed by a Catholic Mass at the Rustic Altar on the Mission grounds celebrated by Felipe Estévez, the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine.
Salutes with cannons, pikes, flags, and arquebuses set up at the Fountain of Youth will accompany the Menéndez’ landing and also his arrival at the Fountain of Youth from the Mission following the religious ceremonies.
At approximately 12:45pm-1:00pm, after the arrival of Menéndez entourage at the Fountain of Youth, a reenactment of the First Thanksgiving will take place. Included will be cooking demonstrations of the kinds of food prepared in 1565. The public will have the opportunity to purchase food from local vendors and dine with the reenactors.
From 1:00pm-5:00pm, members of the Men of Menéndez will present living history demonstrations of weapons, material culture, military drills, and camp life. At 3:30pm, Menendez and St. Augustine’s Royal Family will cut the city’s birthday cake with enough cake to serve 500 people.
Regular admission fees apply at the Fountain of Youth (see their website) with admission free for St. Johns County residents with proper identification.
