Amistad is pleased to present MENORCA IN OUR HEARTS! – A 450th Celebration of Art, Poetry & Flavors of St. Augustine’s Menorcan Heritage, for First Friday Art Walk.
Maria Rosa Johnson-Sintes, an award-winning St. Augustine and Menorcan artist, will exhibit a collection of her acrylic paintings reflecting the vivid memories of her childhood town, Es Mercadal, on the island of Menorca. For Maria Rosa, her colorful paintings with fields of poppies, crisp-white buildings, and the yellows, oranges, blues and greens of the scenery, bring to life the memories of her youth.
Ann Browning Masters, author and poet, will be signing copies of her book “Floridanos, Menorcans, Cattle-Whip Crackers: Poetry of St. Augustine”, published by the Florida Historical Society in May 2015. The poetry reflects the common lives and stories of “mullet-netting, datil pepper-growing, pilau-eating, rum-running St. Augustine” from after the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement. A St. Augustine native, Dr. Masters is a 12th generation Floridian, and a founding member of the Los Floridanos Society, a member of the Menorcan Cultural Society and has served on the Board of the St. Augustine Historical Society.
The Menorcan-St. Augustine Flavors will feature complementary tastings of wines from Spain, along with Datil-Pepper jellies appetizers by Kenny Johns, and traditional Pilau samples from Johnny and Beanie’s restaurant.
Live music will round out this evening of MENORCA IN OUR HEARTS!
