The GTM Research Reserve, in collaboration with the Marineland Dolphin Adventure, invites the public to a free lecture that will be held at Marineland Dolphin Adventure. This month Maia McGuire, Ph.D., will discuss the Florida Microplastic Awareness Project, a citizen-science program. The project was funded in 2015 by an outreach and education grant from NOAA’s Marine Debris Program. Volunteer citizens are collecting coastal water samples, filtering them and looking for microplastics. the data collected is then put into a Google Maps database to show the concentration of these particles visually.
The program is presented the third Tuesday of the month and is part of an ongoing lecture series. The series is designed to help learn more about your coastal natural world and will feature a different speaker each month.
Seating is limited. Tickets must be purchased online — click on the event website link to reserve your spot! Bring your ticket to the Marineland gift shop at 9:45 a.m. on the day of the scheduled presentation to gain entry. Participants without a ticket will not be allowed entry.
