A Classic Theatre (ACT) will hold auditions for the St. Augustine Premiere of THREADS OF SILVER AND GOLD: Women of the Panama Canal, a new play written and directed by Deborah B. Dickey in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. Auditions will be held at the St. Augustine Beach City Hall on Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31 from 7-10 pm. Performances will be in October of 2015. Actors will be asked to read from the script and should bring a current photo and a list of previous experience.
This multi-cultural drama uses poetry, historical documents and the personal accounts of the women who journeyed to Panama to witness the building of the Canal and is told from the perspective of a British and a North American Bride whose experiences stand in marked contrast with the story of West Indian families who came seeking a better life. Full of heroism and striving, the play celebrates the pioneering women who left behind family to face enormous challenges as they witnessed the realization of the 400 year old dream to join the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Told through humor and insights, these women exemplified the resilient spirit of “the women who made the canal and then made it home.”
The multi-ethnic cast includes roles for 2 men and 6 women. With the exception of the role of Theodore Roosevelt, all other actors play multiple roles as the play shifts from the construction period in Act 1 to 1987 in Act 2. Other character requirements include (1) Male African-American or Latino actor, (3) African-American or Latino women and (2) White American women and (1) British woman. Age range for all actors is from 20-60.
