The GTM Research Reserve invites the public to attend a free lecture titled, “Afternoon Insight … Marine Mammals”. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens Marine Mammal Response Team has been collaborating with and assisting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to rescue manatees since 2006. Speaker Craig Miller will discuss the Zoo’s plans to build the Manatee Critical Care Center, which will allow for an even greater contribution to protecting this iconic species.
At present, injured and cold-stressed manatees are transported to the nearest available facility – usually Sea World Orlando or Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Having a center in Northeast Florida could reduce the transport time and play a crucial role in the animals’ survival. Scheduled for completion in 2016, it will be the first facility in Northeast Florida dedicated to the rescue and critical care of injured manatees.
Space is limited! Reservations for the lecture must be made online by clicking on the event website link. For more information, call 904-823-4500.
