Join us for a one-hour visual presentation about the year that changed world history and offered more outstanding movies than in any year before or since. From The Wizard of Oz and Stagecoach to Goodbye, Mr. Chips and Gone with the Wind, Hollywood outdid itself with great movies. Yet 1939 was also a year of high-flying optimism (the New York World’s Fair), new-fangled inventions (television), and tragedy (the advent of World War II in Europe). This presentation goes through the twelve months of 1939 showing what was happening in history, music, sports, radio, and – of course – the movies.
Presented by Dr. Thomas Hischak, Emeritus Professor of Theatre. He is the author of twenty-six non-fiction books about theatre, film, and popular music.
