Welcome to the Grammar Slammer!

St. Augustinians beware, there’s a new sheriff in town when it comes to fighting the battle against bad grammar. Oldcity.com is launching a new blog topic

that focuses on crimes against the English language, especially those that appear in public on marquees and other signage around town.

The first prisoner of the Grammar Slammer is the CVS store on south US1 near Watson Rd. For over a month, the following has been displayed on the store’s

marquee:

alt="CVS Marquee" width="300" height="225" />

We checked with the warden of the Grammar Slammer, and it seems that “ready” is still being spelled with a “Y” these days. Perhaps if quantity was the

problem in this case (and we sincerely hope it was) CVS might consider dropping “a day” from their sign so they could spell “ready” correctly and save the rest of us from having

brain spasms every time we drive by.

Aside from locking up criminals who can’t spell, we at the Grammar Slammer also believe in the use of Grammar Crime Prevention to keep St. Augustine’s youth

population from sliding down the same slippery slope as those before them. With that in mind, our GCP tip of the day is:

Keep Your Yours Straight!

Remember that “you’re” is a shortened version of “you are” whereas “your” just indicates that

something belongs to someone. If you’re unsure which to use in your sentence, replace the word with “you are” and read the sentence out loud. For

example, if you wanted to ask someone about his or her dog, you wouldn’t say “Is that you are dog?” so the right way must be “Is that your dog?”

Check back with us periodically for more tips and suggestions, and stay on your toes or else you might find yourself locked away in the Grammar

Slammer!
