Local Archaeologists to Raise Artifacts from Colonial Shipwreck Wednesday July 14 2010
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Event Type: Talks_Presentations
Cost:
Archaeologists will be raising an artifact from a newly discovered historic shipwreck. The artifact is a cauldron that measures 15 inches in diameter and stands about 15 inches tall. It appears to have three projecting feet at its base and three eye loops around its rim so that it could have stood on or hung above a fire. It is full of sediment, which archaeologists are leaving undisturbed in order to excavate in the controlled conditions of a laboratory, where they may find food or other organic remains.
It is probable that they will raise additional artifacts as well.
Directors and Lighthouse Archaeologists, will be available for questions upon returning to dock.
The boats will leave from the Conch House Marina (57 Comares Avenue, St Augustine, FL 32080-3793).
Lighthouse maritime archeologists have plans to raise the cauldron to conserve and study. Careful analysis of the cauldron will help date the artifact and the shipwreck, which is believed to be from the colonial era.
